Osseo Mayor’s Minutes: Evaluating Fire Dept., Cannabis Moratorium
In the Osseo Mayor’s Minutes, Mayor Duane Poppe discusses the passing of a city council member and the Night to Unite as well as evaluating public safety and a moratorium on cannabis.
Remembering Harold Johnson
Former council member Harold Johnson passed away in July.
“That was really sad about Harold. He was a great servant to the city,” said Poppe, who noted Johnson’s service to the Lions as well as his service on the council. “He was a real asset to the community and he’s sorely missed and condolences go out to the family.”
Evaluating Fire Department
Mayor Poppe said the city is evaluating fire services.
“What’s the most efficient,” said Poppe. “There are ways we can pick up synergy between fire and police departments.”
Poppe says the city is in the beginning stages of evaluating what options and potential changes are.
Regulating Cannabis, THC
The city of Osseo joined other cities in placing a temporary moratorium on the sale of products containing THC in 2022, as they studied how to regulate the sale of THC products. THC is the active ingredient in marijuana. The city will now lift the moratorium and people can apply for licenses to sell.
However, the city passed a moratorium on the sale of recreational cannabis that became legal in Minnesota on August 1.
“We put a moratorium on that until the office of cannabis is established and we understand what the rules are,” said Poppe.
