New Hope Police Offer Tips To Avoid Becoming a Victim of Crime This Holiday Season
As winter approaches, the New Hope Police Department is alerting residents to a seasonal spike in crime and offering practical tips to stay safe.
Community Relations and Crime Prevention Officer Brad Kallio spoke about the dangers of leaving vehicles running unattended during the cold Minnesota winters.
“A vehicle running without anybody around is a big opportunity for thieves,” Kallio said, noting that modern vehicles can be driven away even without a key fob nearby.
Kallio also stressed the importance of never leaving children unattended in a running vehicle, even with the doors locked.
“Thieves are skilled at unlocking doors or breaking windows quickly,” he added.
The holiday season also sees an increase in package thefts.
To mitigate this risk, Kallio suggests scheduling deliveries when someone is home, opting for in-store pickup, having packages delivered to workplaces, or using a P.O. box.
Kallio also advises shoppers to keep purses and wallets on them at all times to prevent theft from shopping carts.
Phone Scams
Phone scammers also pose a heightened threat during the holidays.
“They use fear and intimidation, pretending to have a family member in danger to coerce immediate action,” Kallio warned.
The New Hope Police Department urges the public to stay alert and report any suspicious activities.
“We’re here to help with any questions about scams, crime prevention, or environmental design,” Kallio assured.
By following these precautions, residents can reduce their risk of becoming victims of holiday crime.
Officer Kallio’s message is clear: a safe holiday is a happy holiday.
