Mayor’s Minutes: Osseo’s Duane Poppe
Osseo Mayor Duane Poppe talked recently with CCX Media’s Dave Kiser about the city’s approved budget, recent changes to city council, and ways the community will celebrate the city’s 150th anniversary this year.
The city budget passed in December.
“It took a bit this year, going through the budget, everything with the market value homestead credit exclusion getting wider and larger, and devaluation to the city,” said Poppe. “A lot of unique challenges to the city we had to work through.”
The budget passed will include a 5.3% levy increase.
“We were able to continue some of the direction we were going with the police force and some of the other personnel and able to get that accomplished and able to get that wrapped up,” said Poppe. “It was quite a few long nights to get that thing ironed out.”
Poppe was re-elected to another term as mayor in November, and attorney Nick Torres was elected for the first time as a council member. He joins business owner Mark Cook, who was appointed last year to fill Alicia Vickerman’s seat, which she resigned. Vickerman is now the assistant city administrator.
Poppe called both men good additions to the council, especially because they’re both business owners in the city.
He encourage anyone interested in serving as a volunteer on Osseo’s various boards and commissions to monitor the city’s website for possible openings. He said there were openings on the economic development authority, public safety advisory commission, and the planning commission.
Osseo celebrates 150 years in 2025, and there will be celebrations every month of the year. First up is a birthday cake baking contest, and Poppe and city council members will be the judge. The event takes place on January 30 at 6:30 p.m. at the community center next to city hall.
