Mayor’s Minutes: Maple Grove’s Mark Steffenson
Maple Grove Mayor Mark Steffenson spoke recently to CCX Media’s Dave Kiser about a disappointing state legislative session, plans for the community center expansion, and Maple Grove Days.
State Legislative Session
Steffenson said the city had hoped it would see progress on bills in St. Paul to allow for tax increment financing to help pay for, among other things, development of the old gravel mine area along Highway 169. He said they’d also hoped for some money in a bonding bill to help pay for the community center project, along with funding to help pay for a new interchange at Elm Creek Boulevard and Hwy. 169.
“Here’s a roadway we need to have re-done, an interchange that has to be done for the gravel mine to be successful, and again nothing happened,” said Steffenson. “I think the best way to put it is: absolutely nothing happened over there (in St. Paul), pretty much for anything or anyone.
He did say that Rep. Dean Phillips (R – Minnesota) had hoped to secure some federal funding to help pay for the Elm Creek interchange.
Community Center Expansion
Steffenson said plans continue for construction on a new ice sheet at the Maple Grove Community Center to commence after this summer’s Maple Grove Days, which is July 10-14.
He also said the city would be purchasing part of the property immediately to the west of the community center, now owned by Cub Foods, to expand the parking lot.
Maple Grove Days
Steffenson encouraged everyone to check out the lineup of activities during Maple Grove Days.
“I think there’s two things that are always the most important. First, it’s the parade,” he said. “It’s always wonderful. It’s usually a beautiful night, so that’s what we’re hoping for this year. And then the second thing I always love is the fireworks on Saturday night.”
