Mayor’s Minutes: Maple Grove’s Mark Steffenson
Maple Grove Mayor Mark Steffenson recently spoke with CCX Media’s Dave Kiser as part of the regular Mayor’s Minutes segment.
Legislative Watch
Steffenson said city leaders are mostly pleased with how this year’s legislative session has played out in St. Paul.
“I think in some respects, (it’s) going well,” he said. “In some respects, we’re concerned.”
City leaders are glad to see progress made on changing laws passed last year that made it difficult for school resource officers to be in schools, but Steffenson said they’re worried about talk of a housing bill.
“It seems to change, fundamentally, how the public can be involved in housing projects, and how the city can either approve or deny them,” he said. “It’s a bad bill that has a lot of bad concepts that have a lot of consequences for citizens and taxpayers in how much it’s going to cost us and a bunch of other issues, so hopefully it just dies.”
Community Center Construction Update
Steffenson said plans are moving ahead to begin construction the Community Center expansion after Maple Grove Days this summer.
“That work will start late summer and proceed throughout the year,” he said. “Hopefully we’ll have a new rink sometime next year.”
Highway 610 Construction Beginning
Steffenson also talked about progress on the final expansion of Highway 610, this time to State Road 30.
“People have noticed there are some trees that have been cut out there on west side of Interstate 94 and we’re going to get that interchange done the way it’s supposed to be done,” Steffenson said.
