Mayor’s Minutes: Maple Grove’s Mark Steffenson
Maple Grove Mayor Mark Steffenson recently spoke with CCX Media’s Dave Kiser about notable milestones in the city, and an update on developments including the community center expansion and the extension of Highway 610.
Maple Grove Fire-Rescue 50th Anniversary
Maple Grove Fire-Rescue began in 1975 with just 20 volunteers, said Steffenson.
“We have one of the volunteer fire departments (remaining) in the metro area,” Steffenson said. “It’s a great department.”
There will be celebrations to mark the milestone later this year.
Maple Grove Days
Maple Grove Days was a huge success this year, said Steffenson.
“The event was great. The parade night was a beautiful night for the parade,” he said. “Having so many of the events over at Central Park worked great. Maple Grove Community Organization made it a great event this year.”
Maple Grove Community Center Expansion Update
Construction continues on the third sheet of ice at Maple Grove Community Center.
“The rink is coming along fine,” said Steffenson. “We’re going to have it open in the fall, and the parking lot is going to be done.”
Once that is completed, work will begin on phase two of the expansion, which will ultimately include renovating the existing Life Time Fitness space as a city-run fitness center.
Highway 610 Extension Opening Soon
The next phase of Highway 610’s extension will be open soon. It will connect the highway from Interstate 94 to County Highway 30.
“The plan right now is to have a ribbon cutting to open the final phase in September,” said Steffenson. “Some of us thought this would never come.”
He said planning for the highway began in the 1970s in Maple Grove, with the first federal money approved in 1982.
