Mayor’s Minutes: Maple Grove’s Mark Steffenson
Maple Grove Mayor Mark Steffenson laid out part of the city’s legislative agenda in his recent interview with CCX Media’s Dave Kiser.
City council approved the agenda, which Steffenson said was three parts: to seek additional state funding for three main projects.
Steffenson said the city already has $7 million to spend on improvements for the intersection of U.S. Highway 169 and Elm Creek Boulevard, but it wants to ask the state for the additional $13 million.
He said the city also wants the state to help it expand the tax increment financing district around the gravel mining pits so it can continue development efforts there, and the city also wants an additional $16 million to help pay for improvements to the community center. The Senate Bonding Committee toured the facility and found out more about the planned improvements on January 18.
Steffenson said city leaders plan to meet with the park board and architects soon to finalize drawings and look for bids soon after that.
“We look at it now as a three-phase project. The first phase is the additional sheet of ice,” he said. “Looks like it’ll be a beautiful facility, and similar in design to Central Park.”
Steffenson also mentioned quick progress happening with construction on the new Boston Scientific facility near the intersection of 169 and I-694.
“They’ve been working all winter because of the weather we’ve had, and so they’ve been able to really start moving ahead with that project,” he said. “It’s an incredibly important project for the city.”
