Mayor’s Minutes: Crystal’s Julie Deshler
Crystal Mayor Julie Deshler talked recently with CCX Media’s Dave Kiser about the budget process, changes to parking rules and new permits, and strategic planning.
Budget Talks
The city is undergoing talks about next year’s budget, and Deshler said the city wants to make sure that residents, who may face a levy increase, will still continue to receive strong value for their dollar.
“This year, we’re kind of prioritizing investments in our utilities, streets, and our long-term financial health,” said Deshler.
City council will have public hearing on the budget at its October 7th meeting.
Parking Permit Changes
No one is allowed to park on Crystal streets between 2:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. every day of the year.
“We receive a lot of calls from residents in the community about people parking overnight and we’re not enforcing it,” said Deshler.
Now, the city is offering short-term (two weeks) on-street parking permits for free (first two permits), available at the police department. The city is also offering long-term (summer only) street parking permits for purchase.
“We’re trying to work with residents and also be mindful that cars really should be in the driveway,” said Deshler.
Strategic Planning
The city is undertaking some long-term strategic planning., including the development of a 25-year community vision to guide long-term growth and resilience.
“We’re an older city, fully developed, and it’s time to take a look and improve the image of our community, and freshen up,” said Deshler. “These things don’t happen overnight.”
She said the process will include multiple opportunities for residents’ input.
