Mayor’s Minutes: Brooklyn Park’s Hollies Winston
Brooklyn Park Mayor Hollies Winston spoke recently with CCX Media’s Dave Kiser.
Fire Station
Bidding is open for a new Central Fire Station construction project, something the city has been working on for several years. Fire officials and city leaders have talked openly about the outdated maintenance and health-related conditions at the current Station 2, including how equipment is properly cleaned to clean up toxins that come from fighting fires. The department is also in more of a full-time staffing mode, so more room is needed.
“How quickly we respond to fires, actually gets rated by insurance companies, and that affects your homeowners insurance, so we want to make sure we’re keeping all that down,” said Winston.
Teen Center
Work continues on a new Teen Center adjacent to Zanewood Recreation Center.
“That center serves a number of youth, not only throughout Brooklyn Park, but kids from Brooklyn Center and Robbinsdale and other places come there,” said Winston. “When you realize all these kids interact together, it’s incredibly important to have a positive place to go.”
Juneteenth with Brooklyn Center
Brooklyn Park and Brooklyn Center will team up for this year’s Juneteenth celebration on Saturday, June 21 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at North Hennepin Community College.
“We have a large African-American, African heritage population, so this just really goes to when everyone found out they were free, which is when everyone in the country was free,” said Winston.
