Mayor’s Minutes: Brooklyn Center’s April Graves
Brooklyn Center Mayor April Graves spoke recently with CCX Media’s Dave Kiser about ways you can help keep your neighborhood safe and healthy.
Organics Drop-Off
The city will install an organics recycling drop-off site north of city hall later this fall, intended to help those who live in apartments who may not have access to curbside organics collections.
“I’m seeing more and more organics bins at people’s homes and that’s getting picked up every week,” said Mayor Graves.
Block Captains
The city is always looking for block captains to help keep police and residents informed about what’s going in their neighborhoods.
“Some neighborhoods really have a good group of block captains and some neighborhoods don’t have any at all,” said Graves. “So, I really encourage folks to reach out to Kris Stein, who is our crime prevention specialist, and he can get you signed up.”
Community Health Fair
The Brooklyn Center Community Health Fair is back for its fourth year, and this year is the second year it will be at Brooklyn Center Community Schools.
“We know that our health and well-being is a big part of just our ability to have a quality of life. It’s just gotten bigger and bigger,” said Graves. “It’s just an opportunity for different vendors to come out and talk to community members about the different resources we have in our community, whether that’s mental health, physical health, blood pressure, etc. It’s always been a really popular event.”
Random Acts of Kindness
The city’s annual Random Acts of Kindness program allows residents to nominate their neighbors for going above and beyond, and they can be recognized by city council this fall.
“We really just want to have an opportunity for community members to recognize other members of the community,” said Graves. “So, people that we all recognize as just our local heroes–even if it’s just a small act of kindness, we know that that can go a long way. It’s just a way to recognize and uplift those in our community that make it a beautiful place to live.”
The deadline to nominate someone is October 17. Submissions can be made online.
