Golden Valley Police Participate in Program To Provide Drivers Vouchers for Repair Instead of Tickets
If you get pulled over for having a busted head light or tail light in Golden Valley, you may be expecting a traffic ticket.
You may want to think again.
“(Officers are) not going to give you a citation here in Golden Valley,” said Police Chief Virgil Green. “They’re going to give you a coupon for you to take to an automotive place to get that equipment fixed.”
Golden Valley police are among the many Twin Cities law enforcement agencies that have joined hundreds nationwide as part of the Lights On! Program, which has seen more than 10,000 vouchers redeemed at hundreds of auto repair businesses across the country.
“Headlights or tail lights are expensive on these new cars, so you might, you know, go into Auto Zone or O’Reilly’s and say, ‘Oh, it’s 500 bucks. That’s a lot of money,’” said Green. “A lot of people won’t get that fix, but here’s a program that’s free that will help those citizens get those lights replaced.”
Law enforcement also hope it helps bring about more positive interactions.
“It’s a way to build that bridge between law enforcement and the community,” he said. “We’re here to help in any way we can.”
