Crystal Mayor Talks City Budget, Strategic Planning, and Upcoming Winter Events
Crystal Mayor Julie Deshler answered questions about the city’s on-going budget process, which will include a nearly 16% tax levy for 2026.
City Budget
Deshler said city council wanted to come up with an approved budget that “prioritizes investments in streets, utilities, and long-term financial health” for the city. She said the city needs to “make smart, responsible choices to maintain services after years of underfunding.”
Residents are encouraged to bring questions or comments to a city council meeting on December 2 at 7:00 p.m.
Strategic Planning
Deshler talked more about the city’s efforts to establish some strategic planning.
“We’re focusing on infrastructure, public safety, and economic development,” said Deshler. She also emphasized the need to “plan smart for the future.”
The city will also develop a 25-year community vision to guide the city’s long-term growth, with opportunities for residential input as the process continues.
Holiday Fun
The Crystal Sparkles Holiday Lighting Contest is back after a few years away without sponsors. Deshler thanked the Lions Club for stepping in to restart the contest.
Crystal residents can register their homes by Sunday, December 7. The Lions will award $100 for first place, and $50 for second place, and maps will be distributed to direct those interested to seeing the decorated homes.
Winterfest this year will be more of an afternoon and evening event, at Crystal Community Center on Saturday, December 6 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Deshler said the intention is to add a tree lighting ceremony to the festivities.
