Minnesota Department of Health Issues New Guidelines for Winter Sports Season
The Minnesota Department of Health Monday released new coronavirus pandemic guidelines for the high school winter sports season.
Practices begin next Monday with practice “pods” of athletes not to exceed 25 persons.
In addition, face coverings “must be worn by all persons at all times, including practices and games, with only a few exceptions.” Exceptions include athletes competing in swimming and diving, wrestling and gymnastics.
Games/matches/meets can begin on January 14, 2021.
Monday evening the Minnesota State High School League issued a statement. League Executive Director Erich Martens said “These experiences are so important to students and they have been anxiously waiting to get these winter seasons started. By implementing these safety protocols recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics and required by the Minnesota Department of Health, we have the best chance to provide safe seasons with reduced interruptions and also plan for full postseason experiences.”
Spectators will not be allowed at games, although an exception may be made for parents. Concessions will not be sold at venues.
More details can be found on the MDH and MSHSL websites.
