Blake Boys Basketball Hosts Brooklyn Center’s Senior Night
Brooklyn Center boys basketball player Davion Hall was convinced that he would not be able to experience a senior night.
The Centaur’s starting senior forward found out before the season started that there would be no games played at Brooklyn Center High School this winter because of an unsafe amount of moisture was found underneath the school’s gymnasium.
Brooklyn Center was forced to play every one of their 26 games on the road this season – a tough pill to swallow for Centaur seniors.
“Everybody is rooting against us the whole time, so it’s like, we hit a three, nobody is loud, they hit a three, everybody is loud” said Keyshon Alexander, senior guard for the Centaurs.
“You don’t get to have your home environment, it’s hard you know, but you got to make the best of the situation, said Hall.
While scouting for Brooklyn Center a couple weeks back, Blake boys basketball coach Tyler Biwan came across the story posted on Brooklyn Center’s tough circumstances.
“Always being on the bus earlier, not being on your home gym, for them playing 26 games on the road, I can’t even imagine.”
Biwan got together with his coaching staff and other members of the Blake athletic department to try to help out Brooklyn Center.
Before tip-off on February 26th between the Bears and Centaurs, Blake allowed ten minutes of extra time to allow the Brooklyn Center senior basketball players and cheerleaders to be honored and recognized for their time in their Centaur programs.
“Just putting myself in their shoes and just thinking about not having the opportunity to have a true senior night – that really saddened me just the thought of that,” said Biwan.
For the Hall, having a home away from home was a welcome change to what he’s been used to this season.
“I didn’t know that was going to happen until like a few weeks ago, once I found that out I was really grateful.”
Brooklyn Center’s head coach Brandon Krona has tried his best to keep things positive this year. Blake going out of their way to help out meant a lot.
“Blake stepped up, they gave us an opportunity to come here tonight and shine light on our kids, if we don’t shine light and leave our kids in the darkness – they’ll never show their true potential.”
