Golden Valley Police: Drivers Disobeying Road Closed Signs Creating Dangerous Situation
Golden Valley police are warning wrong-way drivers to pay attention to road construction signs on Winnetka Avenue. Several people are ignoring the signs, driving the wrong way, and creating a dangerous situation. To combat this trend, Golden Valley police have extra patrol cars in the area.
“We wrote three tickets alone for people traveling the wrong way,” said Commander Steve Johnson.
In 30 minutes, our cameras caught three vehicles in the northbound lane disobeying the road closed signs and driving into southbound traffic. Some drivers were bold enough to wait for oncoming traffic to pass before driving the wrong way up the street.
“Certainly, that’s a bad choice. I mean, if the road’s closed, it’s only opened for southbound traffic. If you are choosing to go northbound, into a southbound lane, you’re potentially looking at a head-on collision,” explained Johnson.
The road construction project is off Winnetka Avenue and Ridgeway Road in Golden Valley. If this area continues to be a problem, police might consider closing the road altogether until construction is complete. That’s scheduled for early November, so the road could close entirely for more than a week. Motorists who disobey the signs could face fines of more than $300.
