Woman Killed in Brooklyn Park Apartment Shooting Incident
One suspect is in police custody after a fatal shooting at a Brooklyn Park apartment complex on Monday.
Police were dispatched to Brooks Landing Apartments, at 5825 74th Ave. N., on a report of an active shooter.
Arriving officers found an adult woman who had died after sustaining several gunshot wounds.
Investigators believe the suspect, and adult male, and the victim knew each other.
“What the motive was is unclear,” said Elliot Faust, Brooklyn Park police inspector. “Obviously that’s a big focus of the investigation — trying to figure out why, why. I mean, I don’t know that there’s ever going to be sense to made out of it … there’s not a whole lot of mystery behind ‘the who.’ Lot’s of mystery behind ‘the why,’ but not ‘the who.'”
The gunman also fired shots through the door of an apartment unit. Police believe he was targeting a second victim.
“We believe he did reside there in the apartments, so when the officers got up to the floor that he lived on, we found another crime scene,” Faust said. “There were several shell casings and bullet holes in a door of an apartment unit there.”
After the shooting, the suspect fled the scene and later surrendered peacefully in the 8400 block of Xerxes Avenue North.
“It’s very tragic,” Faust said. “I think the quick efforts by the people that responded, I think probably prevented someone else from losing their life.”
Authorities have not identified the victim.
Murder Charges Pending
The suspect in the incident was booked in Hennepin County Jail. Charges are pending.
Faust called an active shooter situation “one of the scariest things that you could respond to” as a police officer.
The incident came a day after the fatal shooting of two police officers and a paramedic in Burnsville.
“It’s very rare for a call to be dispatched out as an active shooter,” Faust said. “Your mind immediately goes to the school shooting scenario or a mass casualty scenario, and so that’s what you’re mentally preparing for … with the heavy weight of the loss in Burnsville fresh on everyone’s mind, it’s a heavy lift.”
