Woman Dies in Stolen Car Crash After Osseo Retail Theft
A woman is dead and a man is in police custody after they crashed a stolen car in Brooklyn Park on Sunday.
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s office identified the deceased woman late Monday afternoon as 25-year-old Kaiyla Rae Phillips, of Minneapolis.
The medical examiner ruled her death an accident caused by multiple blunt force injuries.
According to the Brooklyn Park Police Department, a man and Phillips allegedly stole merchandise from the NAPA Auto Parts store in Osseo.
The pair drove away from the store down County Road 81. But, at around 12:30 p.m., they lost control of the vehicle and rolled into a ditch. They then struck a culvert near Green Haven Drive.
Witnesses called 911 to report the crash. They also told police that a man ran away from the crash toward the Walmart store across the highway.
Police and the Brooklyn Park Fire Department arrived to find the vehicle upside down and in the culvert. The vehicle sustained “severe damage,” according to a press release.
Citywide Service Towing responded to the scene and towed the vehicle out of the culvert.
“Officers located a female victim who appeared to be an adult and was obviously deceased,” the press release read.
The woman was later identified as Phillips.
Police located the man at Walmart. First responders treated him for minor injures and booked him in jail for outstanding warrants.
Investigators determined that the vehicle involved in the crash had been reported stolen in Minneapolis.
Police are continuing to investigate the incident. Additional charges could potentially follow for the male suspect, police said.
