Why Are Carjackings on the Rise? Police Say Thieves Seek Quick Transportation
The Twin Cities northwest suburbs has seen an increase in carjackings this year. There have been nine cases in Brooklyn Park, five in Golden Valley, five in Brooklyn Center, three in Plymouth and one in Robbinsdale.
The latest armed carjacking occurred in Brooklyn Park. Police in that city were called to the Speedway gas station off Jolly Lane North at around 4:30 a.m. Wednesday.
“He reported that his car had been taken at gunpoint by a lone man wearing a white ski mask and a white sweater,” said Brooklyn Park Deputy Chief Mark Bruley.
The crime happened in a matter of seconds.
“The victim was pumping gas and sat back in his car and was then approached by the male who pointed a gun at him, removed him from his vehicle,” explained Bruley.
No one was hurt. Police found the stolen vehicle a short time later in Brooklyn Center. Officials say the recent rise in carjackings is an extension of the violent crime wave throughout the metro area.
Golden Valley police put out some prevention tips after five carjacking cases in that city.
Carjacking Prevention Tips
-
- Drive with the doors locked. If a thief can’t get into your vehicle, you stand a better chance of leaving with it
- Park in well-lit areas
- Be aware of your surroundings
- Don’t linger in your car, even if the doors are locked
Some law enforcement officials also recommend drivers travel in the center lane on streets, making it more challenging for potential carjackers to approach your car.
Police say if a carjacker threatens you with a gun or other weapons, give up your ride immediately.
“It’s just a car. It’s never worth someone getting hurt or killed over. So, give them what they’re asking for,” said Bruley.
