Weekend Showcase: West Lutheran’s “Still Life with Iris”
West Lutheran High School’s presentation of “Still Life with Iris” is well done. The show is a fantasy adventure for the whole family.
“It’s an all ages show,” said director David Denninger. “It’s a wonderful script that was written by Steven Dietz. It’s a Kennedy Center award winning script. And, it’s just a wonderful show about memories and how far you need to go to keep your past alive,”
Reese Lockner, plays the title character Iris. She lives in an idyllic land called Noctorno. It’s a place where if you lose your coat, you lose your memories.
“Iris finds herself in a situation where she loses her memory,” said Lockner. “And she has to go find out who she is, because she doesn’t know who she is anymore.”
The Great Goods who live on Great Island kidnap Iris. The antagonist’s quest in life is to have one of the best of everything.
“They can only have one of everything that is the best. So they can only have one shoe. They have one earring. They have one chair, that’s on a pedestal,” said Arianna Antonson, who plays Greta Good.
“Their dream was to always have a perfect family. One girl and one boy, one everything. But, Iris has memory of her past, her mother and her father. We took that away from her,” said George Afari, who plays Grotto Good.
But, Iris hangs on to the leather pouch and the button from her coat which serve as a touchstone for her to remember her former life and who she is.
“Still Life with Iris” is onstage at West Lutheran High School Saturday night at 7 p.m. and Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
