Weekend Showcase: Stages Theatre Presents ‘Senorita Mariposa’
In Hopkins, students from across the area are sharing a musical performance that crosses language barriers.
“Señorita Mariposa” is a story about a butterfly that travels from Canada to Mexico. Mauricio Barreto, who plays the sun, said it’s a high-energy show.
“It’s a bilingual show, best enjoyed by English speakers and Spanish speakers,” Mauricio said. “Which is great, because that makes it accessible to a larger audience.”
Barreto said the bilingual parts are easily understandable for both English and Spanish speakers.
The show is based on a children’s book, but all ages are welcome. Maya Haugen, who plays Señorita Mariposa, said it’s interactive. She gets to ask questions of the audience as it goes along. She said that piece has been fun.
“The audience is right there with her, which is really, I think, a beautiful thing,” Maya said.
This show is also the world premiere of Señorita Mariposa in musical form. The book’s author will attend the show on Sept. 29.
The show runs through Oct. 6 at the Hopkins Center for the Arts. Stages offers “pay what you can” shows, as well as sensory-friendly performances. Ticket details, along with more information about the production, are available on Stages’ website.
