Weekend Showcase: Stages Theater produces “Mary Poppins Jr”
Stages Theater’s production of “Mary Poppins Jr” is practically perfect in every way. You’ll recognize the story and the familiar songs. The musical runs 80 minutes and is running through December 27.
Delaney Hunter is Mary Poppins
Stages Theatre’s latest play features a nanny who is practically perfect in every way.
“She’s a modge podge of different things,” says Delaney Hunter, who plays Mary. “With the children she’s a little strict, but she’s also fun. She takes them on different games throughout the show. On the way she brings them to new people like Bert and Mrs. Corey and Chimney Sweeps.”
This is a wonderful musical and you’ll hear all the songs you know and love.
“It sorta fit in the holiday season for us because for us, a holiday show is really all about families spending time together,” says Stages Theatre Artistic Director and CCEO Sandy Boren-Barrett. “And this show is about a family who is in a bit of a crisis actually. And how this particular character, Mary, really helps bring the family together back together.”
The show is a little longer than typical Stages productions at 80 minutes. There’s a ten minute intermission in the middle just to get the wiggles out.
“Towards the end of the show [Mary] sings a song called anything can happen,” says Hunter. “And its one of the most important lessons I think in the show, is that anything can happen if you let it. And that you are the only person that stops you from doing what your dreams are what you want out of life.”
I’ve never seen an audience respond as enthusiastically as I did at this show and I rate it a spirited “S” for supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, of course. Mary Poppins is onstage at Stages Theatre through December 27th.
