North Hennepin Community College’s adaptation of “Alice in Wonderland” hits the stage this weekend.

The Disney animated version of “Alice in Wonderland” hit the screens in 1951. Tim Burton’s version was in theaters in 2009.
But show director Kathy Hendrickson says North Hennepin Community College’s adaptation of “Alice in Wonderland” is truly original.
“Once you get to a certain age, we remember Alice in Wonderland,” says Hendrickson. “It was written 1865. I remember the Disney version of “Alice in Wonderland” was probably pretty much imprinted on my brain. I also read the novel when I was very young.”
But creating a Wonderland onstage was a challenge.
Local artist Moira Bateman created sculptures that dominate the stage. The largest one is 14 and a half feet. The sculptures, backdrop, even the characters, are all in white, so effects are projected on their surfaces.
“Soren Olson, who is our technical director here, really has shaped this entire Wonderland with projection and and with shadow and with lighting and of course with music,” says Hendrickson. “It’s got a lot a lot a lot to offer.”
If you’ve seen versions of Wonderland, or read the book, don’t worry, you’ll recognize characters and scenes. But with that said, this version will be unlike anything you’ve ever seen before.
“Its going to be spectacular,” says actor Wesley Cooper.
Alice in Wonderland is onstage at North Hennepin Community College now through November 3rd.
