Weekend Showcase: Kaleidoscope Performing Arts’ Debuts Show is ‘Seussical Jr.’
There’s a brand new theater company in the northwest suburbs called Kaleidoscope Performing Arts and it’s fitting that it will debut with a show that’s full of color. The company will present “Seussical Jr.” starting July 8 at the Elision Playhouse.
“We want our audience to leave uplifted and encouraged,” said director and company owner Cami Thomassen, who is from Brooklyn Park. “COVID was very hard on kids. This provides a space for them to come, meet friends, develop their skills and grow.”
The show delivers both and Thomassen hopes the message hits home for people too.
“It struck me with a theme right away. Everybody wants to be seen, wants to be known and wants to feel valued,” said Thomassen. “I feel like there is a need and I’m filling into bring more joy back to kids.”
Actor Lucian Book is recognizable as the Cat in the Hat. His role is an active one where he can try out accents and different personas.
“I really enjoy being able to run around and I’ve got several different hats,” said Book. “I really love that.”
Book says the show is one of caring and compassion, and another actor, Sabina Thomassen agrees.
“You don’t have to change yourself for people to know you, for people to like you, for people to include you. You just be yourself,” said Thomassen, who plays Gertrude.
