Wayzata School District Buys Building for New Headquarters
After about a year and a half of searching, Wayzata Public Schools has found a new home for its administrative staff.
The district spent $7.75 million on a former office building in Plymouth at Xenium Lane and 12th Avenue.
Solutran, a company that works in the health care benefits industry, used to own the building.
“It’s located in an area that’s close to Highway 55, [Interstate] 494, 394, Highway 6,” said DeeDee Kahring, executive director of finance and operations for Wayzata Public Schools. “It’s just very easy for members of the community as well as staff to get to this building.”
According to a Minnesota Department of Revenue real estate filing, the sale was finalized on Dec. 18.
Wayzata Centralizes Admin in One Building
According to Kahring, the district’s administration staff is currently spread across five sites.
Now, with staff moving into a single building, new district families will be able to register for courses at a single site.
“If there’s a family that has a particular need, they would have all the resources in one spot at this location,” Kahring said.
The district will also have room to grow in the new building. About 85 people will work at the building, but it’s capacity is more than 100, according to Kahring.
“The number one thing that we saw was it is move-in ready, furnished completely, and all of our staff can be located here,” Kahring said. “We used existing bond proceeds to pay for this, so no funds were coming out of the general fund, which is used for educating our students.”
The district expects to move to the building in February and March.
“This is a long-term facility for our district administration,” Kahring said. “When you walk in, it’s a very nice, appealing building. But, it’s not over the top. It almost looks like it fits within all of our Wayzata [Public Schools] buildings as well.”
