Warm December Brings Slow Start to Outdoor Skating Season
Warm winter weather this December has pushed back the outdoor skating season.
But, parks workers in Golden Valley are hoping that Mother Nature cooperates so the ice rinks can finally freeze.
Golden Valley city employees were out flooding the city’s 15 rinks on Monday as temperatures hovered just below freezing.
Al Lundstrom, Golden Valley park maintenance superintendent, said his goal is to have rinks up and running before families are out of school for the Christmas break.
“We’re actually trying to go against Mother Nature and make ice where we’ve got weather that’s above freezing,” Lundstrom said. “So, we do have frost on the ground. We’re trying to take advantage of that, put a little bit down out a time and then cross our fingers.”
Lundstrom said Golden Valley’s outdoor ice rinks are usually busiest between the Christmas and New Years holidays.
