Volleyball Players Bring Spike of Cheer to Golden Valley Seniors
A group of high school volleyball players brought a spike of good cheer and exercise to a Golden Valley senior living facility this Thursday.
Minnehaha Academy’s varsity girls volleyball team made a visit to Covenant Living of Golden Valley on April 4.
“[I’m] just looking forward to making new bonds and getting a new experience with a different community,” said Liyu Lorato, a Minnehaha volleyball player.
The team played chair volleyball with the seniors, many of which are former teachers or graduates of the high school.
During chair volleyball, participants stay seated while hitting balloons back and forth over a net.
The event brought more than just a healthy dose of cardio to both groups — it also brought a sense of community.
“They just love it,” said Thomas Mullin, fitness coordinator for Covenant Living of Golden Valley. “Honestly, it just brings them so much joy and laughter, and it’s something that they can do with a community, and that’s one of the best parts about living in a place like this, is that sense of community and that sense of purpose.”
Maddy Benka, a Minnehaha volleyball player said she looked forward to chatting with the seniors.
“My favorite part is just like, how much they like to have us here,” she said. “It makes me feel really special and wanted.”
The visit was also a way to celebrate National Student-Athlete Day, which is April 6.
