U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar Announces Run for Minnesota Governor
Referring to “these moments of enormous difficulty,” U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar officially launched her campaign for Minnesota governor this week.
“Minnesota, we’ve been through a lot,” she said in her campaign announcement. “A beloved leader and her husband murdered in their home. Little kids gunned down in a church. The killings of Renee Good, a mom of three, and Alex Pretti, a nurse who took care of our veterans. 3,000 ICE agents in our streets and in our towns sent by an administration that relishes division. We cannot sugarcoat how hard this is.”
Klobuchar, a Democrat and Minnesota’s senior U.S. senator, is seeking to replace Gov. Tim Walz, who abandoned his bid for a third term amid a state fraud scandal that recently made national headlines.
As a four-term lawmaker who has won decisive victories in statewide elections — as well as a unsuccessful bid for a presidential nomination — Klobuchar gives Democrats a high-profile name to replace Walz on the ballot.
“These times call for leaders who can stand up and not be rubber stamps of this administration,” Klobuchar said. “But who are also willing to find common ground and fix things in our state.”
If Klobuchar, a previous Hennepin County Attorney, wins the governor’s race, she’d have to resign from her U.S. Senate seat. That means state law would allow Walz the opportunity to appoint someone to fill her Senate seat until a special election.
If she loses, she’ll have another two years on her term in the U.S. Senate.
Immigration enforcement and fraud are likely to be the two top issues in the governor’s race.
“I’m running for every Minnesotan who wants ICE and its abusive tactics out of the state we love,” Klobuchar said.

Crowded Republican Ticket
Meanwhile, the Republican ticket is crowded, with Speaker of the House Lisa Demuth (R-Cold Spring), Rep. Kristin Robbins (R-Maple Grove), former state Senator and unsuccessful gubernatorial candidate Scott Jensen, My Pillow CEO Mike Lindell, and Kendall Qualls vying for the nomination.
Robbins, who chairs the House fraud committee, called Klobuchar “Walz’s handpicked successor.”
“As governor, she will be more of the same,” said Robbins. “More fraud. More taxes. More radical social experiments.”
Demuth called Klobuchar’s record “disastrous.”
“Amy Klobuchar did nothing while fraudsters exploited our generosity and stole millions of tax dollars.”
