Suspect Drives Stolen Truck Into Crystal Lake
A man who drove a stolen vehicle into Robbinsdale’s Crystal Lake this weekend may face criminal charges.
Robbinsdale police say 911 callers tipped them off to a stolen vehicle near the Crystal Lake boat launch just before 5 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
Arriving officers found a man fleeing from the boat launch.
They stopped the man and found a vehicle submerged in the lake.
The suspect told police he owned the truck, but that he was behind on his payments and wanted to get rid of it. He had tossed the keys into a nearby dumpster.
“Officers identified the individual and found that he had outstanding warrants for the Department of Corrections,” said Robbinsdale Police Captain John Elder. “So he was placed under arrest, [and the] Robbinsdale Police Department is investigating the theft of the vehicle.”
Police determined the vehicle had previously been stolen in Elk River. It also may have been driven in a hit-and-run in Golden Valley.
The driver told police he took a large quantity of drugs after ditching the truck in the lake.
He was transported to the hospital and kept under police supervision while he was evaluated for a possible drug overdose.
Elder said it “does not appear,” that the suspect actually took drugs as he described.
Police expect to book him into the Hennepin County Jail when he is discharged from the hospital.
