Students Stage Walkouts Demanding Stricter Gun Laws After Annunciation Shooting
Students in Golden Valley walked out of school on Friday, Sept. 5, joining their peers across the nation in protest.
A large group of students and teachers walked out of Perpich Arts High School calling for changes to gun laws and an end to gun violence.
Many also wore orange in a show of solidarity with the shooting victims at Annunciation Church in Minneapolis.
“I would say it feels a little dystopian, because it’s like, we have to have this movement,” said Sasha Visalden, a senior at Perpich and one of the walkout’s organizers. “And it’s like, I think it’s emotional, I think it brings quite the feelings up. But it’s also good to know how many people want the change to happen.”

Students at Perpich staged a walkout on Friday.
For some, the walkout was an important reminder that they can make a difference.
“As individuals, we have these conceptions that we can’t make any sort of change, and we have to be complicit with what’s happening in the world around us — in communities, and at a national level. You as an individual can make a difference,” said Kaylee Davis, another of the walkout’s organizers.
The walkout was part of a series put together by the organization Students Demand Action.
Students at Hopkins High School and Breck also staged their own walkouts on Friday.
Meanwhile, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz is considering calling a special session to address gun legislation.
