Standout Student: MGSH’s Vshin Yang
With a smile on his face and a book in his hand, Vshin Yang is more than happy to be completing an assignment. He’s never been one to back down from a challenge.
“He’s been engaged in learning. He’s been interested in what we are doing in class and always works hard,” says Amy Dufault, Vshin’s literature teacher. “He always goes the extra mile with his annotations and his contributions to class. Vshin shows an insight into literature that’s above and beyond his peers.”
Literature is one of the five advanced placement classes on Vshin’s schedule. He says the reason he wanted to take such a heavy load is a way to pay tribute to his parents. Vshin also hopes to set a good example for his four younger siblings.
However, his kind nature extends beyond his family. Vshin serves on student government, where he has a commitment to ensuring everyone’s voice is heard.
“There’s a whole lot of people I can meet and a whole lot of stories that haven’t been told,” says Vshin Yang. “There are a lot of students here who aren’t able to be recognized as often as they should be. A good example of that is the art students.”
Exceeding Challenges
This year Vshin made an art gallery for Maple Grove Senior High art students to display their work. It’s another challenge that he didn’t shy away from.
“He is not afraid of meeting a challenge head on, exceeding expectations for the task given,” added Dufault. “Whether that be writing an essay or completing a presentation, he always rises to the occasion.”
Vshin will be attending Concordia College in Moorhead on a full scholarship. He plans to study psychology.
