SOAR Regional Arts Presents ‘Godspell’ Through Sept. 22
SOAR Regional Arts, a nonprofit performing arts group, is beginning its run of performances of “Godspell” in an outdoor venue.
Performances of the musical begin on Friday in St. Michael. The actors say at the heart of the story is a message of love.
“He’s just preaching love, over and over again,” said Sydney Summers, an ensemble member. “Which I think is really important in any day and age to remember, with just how polarized some things can be to just come back to that foundation of love and acceptance.”
Summers said that theme is clear within the musical. She also said this group is perfect for it. It’s a tight-knit troupe that she’s been a part of since its first production.
“The same people keep coming back, and I think that’s a testament to how great it is,” Summers said.
The show is, essentially, the Gospel of Matthew. Every actor is a disciple, and the characters are named after the actors. The pair playing Judas and Jesus are the only two named characters.
Big Themes
Director Ryan Nielson said a small cast enhances the story.
“A show like Godspell really lends itself to a family environment, because it’s ten actors the entire time,” Nielson said. “It’s 10 people who never leave the stage.”
The 10 characters each explore the themes of trust, community and character through song and dialogue. Nielson said there are many lessons to take away from the story.
“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you … that is the best parable. That’s the best idea right there,” Nielson said.
At the center of the story is Jesus, played by Nathan Beal.
“It’s a big, kind of daunting task to step into that role and know how much is relying on you,” Beal said.
He’s played Jesus in “Godspell” before, but this is a new experience. The theater is outdoors, and he’s taking on the role the full show. He hopes people enjoy the production, the set and all its moving pieces. He also hopes they leave with a purpose.
“Optimism and hope,” Beal said. “And trusting that things will get better, and you can make them better.”
Performances start Sept. 13 and run through Sunday, Sept. 22. The show’s location is Lions Pavilion in Town Center Park in St. Michael. Tickets are free, but donations are suggested.
Specific performance dates and times can be found on SOAR’s website.
