School Spotlight: Osseo Senior High’s Flex Learning Space
The Flex Learning space is not a standard classroom setting at Osseo Senior High School.
It has mobile seating and an interactive environment. It’s reserved for students taking online courses.
“What they’re able to do is they’re able to take that class and have flexibility of what they’re working on,” said Ben Karls, the staff development specialist for Osseo Senior High School.
Unlike a typical study hall, students have the option to use that time to meet with online teachers.
A coach like Karls will also be on hand if help is needed.
“I’ll work with the teachers and say I’m hearing this from the kids, they need a little bit more structure here, these instructions aren’t as clear, and teachers will communicate with scholars,” said Karls.
High school senior Aunty Johnson said the flexible work space is helping her in many ways.
“Time management, it’s helping me a lot because I’m managing my time more wisely,” said Johnson.
The flex learning space also allows for conversations and collaboration with other students.
“We’re all taking the same class and so I can be like ‘hey I don’t understand this, do you understand it and can you help me and can I help you?” Johnson said.
Karls said the new work space along with online courses relate to today’s workforce.
“Because its no longer a world where you go directly to your site, often times you can be working from home, you can be working with colleagues from another country, another state,” he said.
Karls added that the 21st century model will prepare students for college and beyond.
