Robbinsdale Woman Finds Creative Freedom Making State Fair Scarecrows
A Robbinsdale woman has a State Fair tradition all her own. It doesn’t involve cheese curds or pronto pups, but it does require a lot of creativity.
Kate Richardson enters the scarecrow contest annually. She said she loves the creative freedom this contest gives her.
“I like to do crafts, but I like other people to enjoy them as well,” Richardson. “This is an opportunity for me. I don’t like to invest the time in something and it’s just me that sees it. So, I like to do it for others.”
In 2023, Richardson crafted a popular Marjorie Johnson scarecrow, a Robbinsdale celebrity baker whose won many blue ribbons over the years.
This year, her creation is a girl wearing a bonnet, sitting on a swing. She said she made it using things she had around the house.
Something Richardson said she loves to do is make the scenes creative and a little spooky. The swing moves with the wind, and her scarecrow’s head is robotic and interactive, so it follows people who walk by.
