Robbinsdale To Host Free Ice Fishing Clinic on MLK Day
If you and your family would like to try out ice fishing, there’s a free opportunity coming up on Monday in Robbinsdale.
Families can learn ice fishing in a safe, protected environment on Crystal Lake.
Elpis Enterprises, a Minnesota nonprofit, is putting on the event. Elpis employs at-risk youth and puts them on paths to success through hands-on internships. This particular project’s goal is to get 10,000 kids from diverse backgrounds on the ice.
Karl Erickson, the organizer of the project, said the event goes on even with the chilly temperatures. The ice houses are heated and Erickson said it’s a great way to bundle up and learn a new skill.
Erickson said this is also a great way for kids to be safer in their environment. On Friday, Minneapolis police, fire and parks officials helped put on an ice angler project in Theodore Wirth Park. There, 160 north Minneapolis kids learned ice safety and ice fishing.
“Part of this is to get other people from other backgrounds a chance to understand the safety of it, understand how much fun it can be, and get rid of all the barriers to participation,” Erickson said.
How to Sign Up
The event begins at 10 a.m. and goes in shifts until 3 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 20, on Crystal Lake in Robbinsdale.
Walk-ups are welcome, but registration is encouraged. Families can sign up on Robbinsdale’s website under the family friendly “ice fishing” category.
If your family can’t make the Jan. 20 event, Elpis is also holding an ice fishing event with the city of Maple Grove on President’s Day. In the future, Erickson hopes to get more schools involved so students can go as a field trip.
