Creating a New Duck Dynasty in Robbinsdale
Mac Murphy claims he ended up owning four ducks by accident.
The 16-year-old Armstrong High School student bought two ducks last spring, thinking he knew what he was in for.
“So, it was three months. I’d show my parents I’m responsible and able to take care of them,” said Murphy. “Companionship. And (then) they (would) fly away. I’d get new ones the next year. They didn’t fly away, and I still got new ones the next year.”
Murphy didn’t realize the ducks he bought last year don’t fly.
So, rather than mess up his plan to start his own dynasty of ducks, he bought two more this spring. In order to lawfully own four ducks in the city limits of Robbinsdale, he had to apply for a permit through city council.
His father, former mayor and recently-elected city council member Regan Murphy, recused himself from the vote on April 18.
Mac now owns four ducks: Minty and Noche from last year and Daisy and Phoebe, born just last week.
“It just gives me something to do, something to take care of and I really love them,” Murphy said.
Neighbors stop by and classmates fawn over pictures of the ducks, which now have their own Instagram account.
He even hopes the feathered flock could help him land a date.
“100 percent,” he said with a big grin.
