Teacher Entering 32nd Year Offers Advice for New Teachers
Most students in the CCX viewing area return to school on Tuesday.
But teachers returned this week, including two in the Robbinsdale School District with quite a story to tell.
If you are looking for tricks of the teacher trade, visit Mike Vestal’s classroom at Northport Elementary School in Brooklyn Center.
This is the third-grade teacher’s 32nd time setting up his classroom.
“Trying to get as organized as possible, because you aren’t going to have that time in the school year,” said Vestal.
He’s learned what it takes to have a good year.
“You better be flexible. Don’t be worried about other things. You can only control what you can can control,” said Vestal.
It’s good words of advice for new teachers like Halle Wagner.
Wagner is busy unpacking school supplies at Sandburg Middle School in Golden Valley, getting ready for her first on the job.
It wasn’t long ago when she was a student herself.
“This time last year, I was getting ready for my senior year of college,” said Wagner.
The new math teacher has some jitters about the first day.
“I’m definitely a little nervous, like I feel like there’s a lot I don’t know yet, and will continue to learn about,” said Wagner. “But, I’m more so just excited and the other teachers have been so kind to me.”
Whether it’s the first year or 32nd year, teachers are looking forward to meeting their new students, who make their rooms truly special.
“I’m super excited to meet my students. I can’t wait to get to know them,” said Wagner.
