Robbinsdale Police Warn of Roofing Scam Targeting Seniors
Robbinsdale police are warning homeowners about a roofing scam targeting seniors.
According to the Robbinsdale Police Department, a white man with an “Irish accent” has approached homeowners with an offer to fix their damaged roof.
This man, who identifies himself as “Tony,” has fake business cards that appear to show his employment with legitimate local roofing companies.
Police say the scammer and his crew will enter into a verbal agreement with the homeowner to fix the roof. After dismantling part of the roof, the team asks for payment.
When the victim has paid the scammers, they abandon the project and make off with the victim’s money.
In some cases, the scammers have left large sections of the victim’s roof unprotected.
Recently, the group swindled a 91-year-old woman out of $10,000.
Robbinsdale police suggest that homeowners use written contracts to come to terms with potential roofers or other home remodelers. Homeowners should also pursue second opinions on housing projects like roofing.
Police also recommend that homeowners do not pay for their work until it is completed.
