Robbinsdale Police Arrest Myon Burrell for Gun Possession
A man who was freed from prison in 2020 after a high-profile review of his case was arrested this week by Robbinsdale police.
Myon Burrell was sentenced to life in prison as a teenager after he was found guilty of the 2002 shooting of 11-year-old Tyesha Edwards in Minneapolis.
Following media scrutiny, as well as calls from activists, the Minnesota Board of Pardons commuted his sentence in 2020.
However, Burrell, now 38 years old, is once again back behind bars after a traffic stop with Robbinsdale police on Tuesday, Aug. 29.
According to a search warrant, an officer saw Burrell’s vehicle “speeding” and using “poor driving conduct in the lane.”
The officer initiated a traffic stop on Burrell’s vehicle. The stop occurred around 10:55 a.m. at the intersection of Indiana Avenue North and Lake Drive. The police officer observed smoke coming out of the window during the traffic stop.
“The officer asked the suspect to step out to perform field testing to determine if he was impaired,” the warrant reads. “[Burrell] attempted to walk away and then fought with officers. [Burrell] was the only occupant of the vehicle.”
Officers searched his vehicle and found a handgun in the center console.
Police filed the warrant to obtain Burrell’s DNA and test it against DNA on the handgun.
Burrell is prohibited from firearm possession due to his previous felony conviction.
