Robbinsdale Moves to Raise Tobacco Sales Age to 21
The Robbinsdale City Council took the first step toward a so-called T21 ordinance Tuesday. The measure would raise the legal tobacco sales age from 18 to 21. It would also restrict sales of mint, menthol and wintergreen-flavored tobacco products.
The proposal passed its first reading at Tuesday night’s council meeting 4-1. Pat Bakken was the lone no-vote.
“Eighteen-year-olds are considered adults,” said Bakken. “They can go to war, they can get married, they can buy a house legally. And I just think that to restrict their ability to buy something that is legal is just a little bit full of hypocrisy.”
The measure’s second reading for final approval is set for March 19.
