Robbinsdale District Says Racist Taunts Directed at Cooper Girls Basketball Team
Robbinsdale School District officials are responding to an incident that involved accusations of racist taunts directed toward Cooper High School girls basketball players.
The incident occurred Tuesday night at a game at New Prague High School.
Robbinsdale school officials released a statement on the matter saying there were several accounts of spectators making racist taunts at the Cooper girls team. The school district says those taunts were monkey sounds that have been used in America’s racist past to deride African-American athletes.
“This type of behavior is abhorrent and unsportsmanlike,” said David Engstrom, superintendent of Robbinsdale Area Schools. “It is cruel to use racial taunts toward anyone – especially students.”
One coach affiliated with Cooper says the taunts were “very loud” and noticeable.
CCX News reached out to the New Prague District but did not hear back on Wednesday. However, sources tell CCX News that the district has hired an outside firm to investigate the matter and action could be taken.
