Robbinsdale Diggers Win at State Fair
The Federated Garden Clubs of Minnesota floral competition is always a big draw at the Great Minnesota Get-Together. More than 12 members of the Robbinsdale Diggers Garden Club participated in the event this year.
Wednesday morning, Betty Beck from Robbinsdale scrambled to get her things for the show on display. She has more than 25 items in this year’s flower show competition and they include herbs, tubers and annuals.
“It’s just fun, and I see all the different creativity of a lot of the other people in the club,” said Beck.
Twenty-eight garden clubs are participating this year. Gardeners take the very best samples out of their yards and show them off here.
“They are carefully choosing what horticulture they raised this year, and they’ve cleaned it up and are very precise about how they stage it,” explained Rene Lynch, chair judge with the Federated Garden Clubs of Minnesota.
Lynch says judges are looking for several things including conformity and no blemishes.
Besides horticulture, people can compete in other categories: floral design, arts and crafts, and photography.
