Road Project Near Armstrong High School To Start in 2025
The city of Plymouth is preparing to rebuild a busy road near Armstrong High School and Plymouth Middle School, but the project remains two years out.
A section of 36th Avenue, between Kilmer and Zachary lanes, is slated for reconstruction starting in spring 2025.
The road has failing pavement, according to Mike Payne, Plymouth assistant city engineer.
“With that, this is an opportunity to address some of the other issues such as congestion throughout the corridor, especially around peak school times,” Payne said. “Drop-off time and pickup time in the afternoon are times when we see congestion in the corridor.”
During reconstruction, the city will grind off the existing pavement and repave the street. While the pavement is removed, crews will repair sanitary sewer lines, curbs and gutters, and water main valves.
Engineers may add elements like medians and turn lanes to improve the flow of traffic on the roadway. They’re also considering pedestrian improvements for the project.
The city gathered extensive public comment as part of the project. Outreach efforts included door knocking, an interactive website and social media postings.
“We received roughly 200 comments from the public, and our project web page had over 1,700 views,” Payne said. “A lot of the consistent feedback we got was relating to the congestion in the corridor, especially around school pickup, drop-off times, but also pedestrians looking for improvements to the pedestrian facilities throughout there.”
Many comments also focused on pedestrian facilities and “making crossings safer,” Payne said.
Reconstruction should be finished by winter 2025.
