Reading, Math Tutors Needed in Northwest Suburbs
The Reading Corps and Math Corps needs tutors for this next school year.
“Support that these tutors can provide can go miles and miles into making a difference in terms of students’ lives,” said Sarah Loquasto, with Reading Corps & Math Corps. “Within the past few years with the effects of the pandemic, we’ve seen a lot of disruption as far as students and education. Throughout the state of Minnesota, we are recruiting Reading Corps tutors, approximately 1700 tutors to serve in this next school year.”
According to a July 5th White House press release, America’s students are on average two to four months behind in reading and math because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Biden administration further stressed that tutors are crucial to dealing with this learning deficit.
“As students bounce back from more than two years of disrupted learning, clearly, the demand is high for reading, math or early learning tutoring,” Reading Corps, Math Corps and Early Learning Corps Managing Director Sadie O’Connor said in a release.
The Anoka-Hennepin School District has been awarded a budget for 33 Minnesota Reading Corps tutors. By the city, the tutor need is: Andover 3, Anoka 3, Blaine 1, Brooklyn Center 1, Brooklyn Park 2, Champlin 3, Coon Rapids 11, Dayton 1, Ramsey 8.
There are also needs in the Osseo and Robbinsdale School Districts.
“It’s important to have these positions filled because there are so many students who have a need,” said Loquasto. “This is a service opportunity, so helping out one’s community can have a big impact.”
No teaching experience is needed, as tutors will be fully-trained and will serve on-site at the school 35, 25 or 18 hours a week. All tutors receive a stipend every two weeks, plus up to $4,500 to pay for college tuition or student loans. Many tutors also qualify for additional benefits like free individual health insurance and childcare assistance.
