PUPS Seeks Expansion of Maple Grove Animal Shelter
Pets Under Police Security, or PUPS, took in a record-breaking number of strays last year. Now, officials that oversee the Maple Grove animal pound are thinking about expanding it.
PUPS serves a seven-city area in the northwest metro. It functions as a joint-powers agreement between Maple Grove, Champlin, Crystal, Brooklyn Center, Brooklyn Park, New Hope, Plymouth and Robbinsdale.
Stray or runaway cats and dogs from the area that are captured by animal control officers end up at PUPS.
The facility has been so busy this year that it sometimes closes to keep from overfilling its kennels.
This week, officials approved a $29,500 study to determine if the facility needs expanding.
Each of the cities involved in the joint powers agreement are contributing to the costs of the study.
