Primary Day Attention Turns To Omar-Samuels Fifth District Race
Voters will head to the polls on Tuesday, Aug. 13, for the August primary. In Minnesota’s Fifth Congressional District, there is a contentious Democratic race.
Incumbent Democratic U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar faces a challenge from former Minneapolis City Council Member Don Samuels. This is a rematch after Omar narrowly beat Samuels in the primary two years ago.
Both candidates were out in the community Monday morning. Samuels started the day campaigning at a busy Brooklyn Boulevard intersection in Brooklyn Center. He joined other volunteers, holding signs and encouraging citizens to vote in the primary.
Samuels said his neighbors asked him to run years ago. To him, and those on his team, this is a movement.
“They want someone who is engaged, who is not divisive, who can bring people together even during contentious times and on contentious issues,” Samuels said.
Meanwhile, Rep. Omar joined other elected officials and community leaders in northeast Minneapolis Monday morning. Leaders celebrated the installation of fire suppression systems in all Minneapolis public housing high rises. The project was completed with a combination of funding from the city, state and federal government.
That news conference did not focus on the election, but afterwards, Omar expressed confidence in the primary to reporters.
“Positive thoughts. Really excited to keep talking to voters, getting them out. It’s going to be a turnout thing, so we’re really excited to just continue to have conversations with people and get them out,” she said.
