Prairie Farms Donates Lactose-Free Milk to Brooklyn Park Food Bank
June is Dairy Month. Second Harvest Heartland received a big donation to help area families celebrate.
Prairie Farms Dairy donated four large pallets of its lactose-free milk to the food bank on Thursday. Ron McNamare, assistant sales manager at Prairie Farms in Woodbury, said the company likes to do special events in June to honor its dairy farmers.
“There’s an increasing need for lactose-free, and so we want this product to get out to families in need,” McNamare said.
Lindsey Oschmanek, Second Harvest Heartland’s director of sourcing and demand planning, said the food bank spends $1.4 million a year on milk for area families. That’s four truckloads a week.
Oschmanek said Second Harvest Heartland receives more requests for special dietary needs every day and lactose-free milk isn’t something the food bank can typically provide.
“This is just another way that we can make sure that not only does that milk go further in terms of its reach and access, but also for those who need a lactose-free product,” Oschmanek said.
Prairie Farms’ partnership with Second Harvest is ongoing. McNamare also said the lactose-free milk is a new product and is excited to offer it to the community.
