‘Portfolio Day’ Offers Perpich Students a Glimpse into Their Future
Perpich Arts High School students got a look at their future during class Monday. It was “Portfolio Day” at the Golden Valley school, a chance for students to share their art with art colleges across the country.
Twenty-two institutions were on campus this year to speak with juniors and seniors. A range of school officials included representatives of gap-year programs, colleges, universities and technical schools.
Studio Arts Chair Katherine D’Elia said this is a good time of year for students to think about the future.
“It’s a very important, kind of stressful time for our seniors while they try to figure out what they want to with their futures,” D’Elia said. “Big decisions to make. And this way, they have a lot of opportunities presented to them so they can make choices.”
The day began with a panel session with different programs. In the afternoon, students shared their portfolios and work with experts and admissions staff. It provided an opportunity for students to practice interview skills and get feedback.
Perpich senior Zero Yant is one of those students. He said he primarily does art with Indian ink and hopes to major in illustration.
“I’ve been making a lot of portraits recently,” Yant said. “I like drawing a lot of birds.”
Yant said he hopes to attend the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design or Minneapolis College of Art and Design.
