Plymouth Seeking Eight New Part-Time/On-Call Firefighters
Plymouth is putting out the call for people to become part-time/on-call firefighters. The new firefighters will serve three fire stations and need to be ready to jump into action at a moment’s notice.
“I would love to bring on at least eight new part-time firefighters,” said Battalion Chief Steve Baker.
Plymouth part-time/on-call firefighters must be ready to respond to various emergencies. They leave their regular jobs when a fire call comes in, then quickly transition to firefighting. Each on-call firefighter works an average of 10-15 hours a week.
“There are some physical requirements that go with it. I mean, it is a labor-intensive job when we’re in the act of firefighting,” explained Baker.
Baker says recruiting part-time/on-call firefighters can be challenging because of the requirements, like having to live within an eight-minute travel time to one of the city’s three fire stations.
Candidates must be at least 18 years old, have a high school degree or equivalent, and be dedicated to serving the community.
“Helping somebody on what could be their worst day, is probably the single most gratifying thing you can experience,” remarked Baker.
Plymouth is hosting an informational meeting on July 7 at 6:30 p.m. at city hall. The job posting closes at 8 a.m. Monday, July 11.
