Plymouth Forestry Worker To Compete in International Tree Climbing Championship
Trees are an overarching part of Sydney Hudzinski’s life. As a forestry technician for the city of Plymouth, she’s often up among the leaves and branches.
“Trees are so gorgeous, and they’re such wonderful beings that we have on this planet,” she said. “The ability to get paid to climb trees is just wild. It’s such a serene feeling up in the canopies, especially when you get like a light breeze, it’s just indescribable.”
CCX News met her as she was hanging holiday lights on a tree near city hall. The chore was a good excuse for her to strengthen her skills, as well as her body.
“I like the physical activity with it,” she said. “You can go to the gym and you can work out, but there’s so many different muscles that you didn’t know you had, that I found out very quickly.”
She puts those skills to good use in her competitive climbs.
“I’ve done about 12 competitions in two different countries,” she said.
After winning a local competition, she qualified for the International Society of Aboriculture’s Tree Climbing Championship in Savannah, Georgia.
“Ever since my first [competition] in Minnesota back in 2022, it’s just been on my goal, and I’ve been working really hard to get to it,” she said. “A lot of practice, and so, just going is so exciting.”
It’s a worthy test of her talents at her job-turned-hobby. Regardless of the outcome, she’s excited to spend more time in the canopies.
“It would be rad — it would be really wonderful to be successful, but at this point, with it being my first one, I’m just excited to go and have fun,” she said.
