Perpich Arts High School Showcases Musical Talents in ‘Sound Works IV’ Concert
For those interested in an evening of music, Perpich Arts High School in Golden Valley may have just the thing tonight.
The public school’s music department is opening its doors, free of charge, to anyone interested in viewing student ensembles. Students are performing both covers of songs and original works.
One of those groups is the creatively-named Au Revoir Teeth. It’s made up of four Perpich students: Mina, Kate, Audrey and Ryan. They’re all friends, and chose each other for this collaboration.
“Learning how to work with other people in music is something that I haven’t done before coming here,” Kate said.
Together, they got to try new things. Each ensemble member used their own talents. Ryan said he’d never sung before the project got underway. On the other hand, Audrey tried some new instruments.
“I haven’t really played drums or bass a whole lot before. It’s just kind of what the songs need, and that’s always fun, to learn something new,” Audrey said.
The students played covers as well as original songs. Au Revoir Teeth’s original song “Crazy Cowboy” opened their set. The students say it’s a dramatic take on a country song.
“We thought it would be funny to make something really, really absurd and make a stereotypically Western story,” Ryan explained.
“I kind of took this as an opportunity to play the tambourine, mostly. That was the most exciting part for me,” Mina said.
The song took them about a month to craft. Ryan estimates that the songwriting and practice took each of them 40 hours to perfect.
‘Sound Works IV’
Au Revoir Teeth is one of a number of bands performing at 7 p.m. Friday, May 17, at Perpich. “Sound Works IV” is free and open to the public in Perpich’s performance hall. Ryan said it’s worth checking out.
“It’s fun to see local artists,” Ryan said. “Especially young local artists. Because I feel like… you see a lot of different music and a lot of different genres, and new stories told.”
You can reserve tickets for the show on a Perpich Google Form. There are also still spots available at the door.
